Deltapark Neeltje Jans is committed to the conservation of cuttlefish in the Oosterschelde.
On 20 September 2025, the first 40 young cuttlefish were released, and the project continues. Many eggs are still developing, and the cuttlefish keep reproducing, so that the population in the area can grow and become stronger over time.
From egg to new generation
The project began with cuttlefish that hatched in our own aquarium from the eggs of earlier generations. Their offspring now form a new generation, raised entirely in captivity, which is already laying eggs themselves. This approach provides valuable knowledge for biologists and contributes to the conservation of the species.
Back to their natural habitat
Our young cuttlefish are being guided to their new home in the Oosterschelde. This not only supports the local population but also offers an opportunity to learn more about the behaviour and ecology of these extraordinary animals.
Importance for nature
The cuttlefish population in the Oosterschelde has declined in recent years. By returning animals to their natural habitat, Deltapark Neeltje Jans actively contributes to the recovery of this mysterious and fascinating species.
“Our cuttlefish show how surprising nature can be,” says Madelon van der Maas, Head of Animal Care. “There is still so much to discover about these animals. What is happening here cannot be seen anywhere else in the Netherlands.”
